Cebu Island Hopping: Where to Go and How It Works
Island hopping in Cebu means two quite different things: a half-day boat tour to sandbars and snorkeling stops, usually out of Mactan, or a proper ferry crossing to an island you stay on, like Bantayan, Malapascua, or the Camotes. The first is a morning; the second is a trip. Knowing which one you are booking is most of the planning.

Half-day boat tours from Mactan
The most common Cebu island hopping trip is a half or full day out of Mactan on a banca, stopping at nearby sandbars and snorkeling sites, usually with lunch on board or on an island. Boats leave in the morning, and the whole thing fits either side of a flight.
This is the version most visitors mean when they say island hopping, and it needs almost no planning: book a day ahead through your resort or an operator at the pier, check the forecast, and carry cash for the environmental fees collected on arrival at each island. There is little shade on a banca, so bring cover as well as sunscreen.
Ferry crossings to islands you stay on
Bantayan, Malapascua, and the Camotes are different — these are scheduled ferry crossings to islands with their own accommodation, not day tours. Bantayan goes from Hagnaya in San Remigio, Malapascua from Maya in Daanbantayan, and the Camotes from Danao or Cebu City.
Each involves a long land transfer before the boat — three to four hours up through northern Cebu for Bantayan or Malapascua — so treat them as overnight trips at minimum rather than day tours. Last crossings run in the evening and finish earlier than most people expect, so check the day's schedule before you commit to a late start.
What it costs and what is included
Prices vary by operator, boat size, and whether you join a shared trip or charter privately, and most quoted rates exclude the environmental or entrance fees collected at each island. Snorkel gear and life vests are usually provided; underwater cameras and guides generally are not. Confirm what is included before paying, since the fee structure differs between operators.
Weather and cancellations
Every boat trip in Cebu is weather-dependent. The coastguard suspends crossings when conditions are rough, which happens most often between June and November and can hold for a day or more. Build a buffer day before a flight if an island is on your itinerary, and do not schedule a crossing for the morning you fly home.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the best island hopping in Cebu?
For a half-day boat tour, the sandbars and snorkeling sites off Mactan are the easiest and most popular. For islands you actually stay on, Bantayan has the best sand, Malapascua the best diving, and the Camotes the least development. They are different kinds of trip rather than competing options.
How much does island hopping in Cebu cost?
It depends on the operator, the boat, and whether you join a shared tour or charter privately, and most quoted prices exclude the environmental and entrance fees each island collects on arrival. Snorkel gear and life vests are normally included; confirm the rest before paying.
Can island hopping be cancelled because of weather?
Yes, and it happens regularly between June and November. The coastguard suspends crossings when seas are rough, sometimes for more than a day. Never schedule a crossing for the morning of a flight, and keep a buffer day if an island stay is part of your itinerary.
