5 Days in Cebu: An Itinerary With the South Coast

Five days is the point where Cebu opens up, because you can finally sleep somewhere other than the city and stop losing half of every day to the drive. This itinerary keeps the first two days around Cebu City and Mactan, then moves south for two nights so that Moalboal, Kawasan Falls, and Oslob become short local transfers instead of pre-dawn starts. Day five comes back north for a last afternoon by the water before you fly out.

Days 1 and 2: Cebu City and Mactan

Keep the opening two days close to base. Day one is the Cebu City heritage loop in the morning and the Busay hills in the afternoon. Day two is a beach day on Mactan — a resort day pass or an island hopping tour to the sandbars — which also gets the airport-side part of the trip out of the way early.

Doing Mactan now rather than at the end means you are not gambling a beach day against a delayed flight, and it leaves the last day free to be a buffer if the drive back from the south runs long.

Day 3: move south

On day three, transfer to southern Cebu and base in or near Moalboal — Panagsama for the dive shops and the house reef, White Beach for sand and quiet, or Badian a little further south. The drive from the city is about three hours down the west coast highway.

Arrive by early afternoon and the rest of the day is free for the sardine run straight off the shore, which is at its calmest and least crowded outside the middle of the day anyway.

Day 4: Kawasan, canyoneering, or a dive

With a night already banked on the coast, day four is a proper local day rather than a pre-dawn start: canyoneering through the Matutinao gorge to Kawasan Falls, a boat dive at Pescador Island, or a slower morning snorkelling the reef wall and an afternoon at the falls without the canyoneering.

Oslob's whale sharks are also in reach from here as a half-day out and back — closer from Moalboal than from the city — if you would rather spend day four there and keep the reef for the afternoon you arrived.

Day 5: back north to fly out

Day five is the return leg. Drive back up to Mactan, roughly three hours, with enough of the afternoon left for a last swim or a resort day pass near the airport before an evening flight. An early flight means leaving the coast at first light instead.

If your flight is the morning of day five, treat day four as the real last day and drive back the evening before rather than risk the transfer against a check-in time.

Why two bases beat one

The whole reason five days works and three does not is the second base. Running every southern trip out of Cebu City means six to eight hours in a van before you have done anything; one night on the coast turns two of those trips into short transfers.
