Things to Do in Northern Cebu

Long white sand beaches, Malapascua dive trips, and quiet coastal towns from Medellin to Daanbantayan.

All Cebu City Mactan Northern Cebu Southern Cebu Bantayan Island Camotes Islands

North of Cebu City the coastal road runs three to four hours up to Daanbantayan and the port at Maya, where boats leave for Malapascua. The north trades Mactan's resort density for long, quiet white sand beaches and small coastal towns — best as an overnight trip rather than a day out, given the drive.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get to northern Cebu from Cebu City?

Plan on three and a half to four hours by private car up the northern coastal road to Daanbantayan, and around four to five hours by bus from the North Bus Terminal. That travel time is why the north works better as an overnight or weekend trip than as a day out from the city.

Is northern Cebu worth the drive?

If you want quiet, yes. The north has long white sand beaches with a fraction of Mactan's crowds, and it is the jumping-off point for Malapascua — one of the few places in the world with reliable thresher shark sightings. If you only have a day or two on the island, Mactan or the south is the easier call.

How do you get to Malapascua Island?

Malapascua is reached by boat from the port at Maya in Daanbantayan, at the northern tip of Cebu. You travel by bus or car to Maya first — about four hours from Cebu City — then cross by public or chartered boat in roughly 30 to 45 minutes, weather permitting.

When is the best time to visit northern Cebu?

The dry season from roughly March to May brings the calmest crossings and clearest water, which matters more here than elsewhere on the island because the boat trips to Malapascua and the offshore sandbars are weather-dependent. Crossings can be cancelled outright during storms from June to November.
