Kawasan Falls
About Kawasan Falls
Kawasan Falls in Badian is Cebu's most famous waterfall, a three-tier cascade of turquoise water on the Matutinao River about 120 kilometers south of Cebu City. The main drop falls roughly 40 meters into a wide natural pool ringed by canyon walls and jungle, with a second tier of around 20 meters and quieter pools farther upstream. The distinctive blue-green color comes from the limestone karst the water passes through after rising at Kabukalan Spring, and the Matutinao River system has been repeatedly recognized as one of the cleanest inland bodies of water in the Philippines. Most visitors come either for the falls alone — swimming in the main pool, riding the traditional bamboo rafts to the base of the cascade, and walking the short riverside trail in from Matutinao — or arrive at the end of the Kawasan canyoneering route, a 5.5-kilometer descent of the Kanlaob River canyon combining cliff jumps, natural rock slides and swims. Entrance for a straightforward falls visit is around ₱200, while guided canyoneering is a regulated activity costing roughly ₱2,000 per person. Kawasan Falls is one of the best day trips in southern Cebu for travelers seeking turquoise swimming holes, canyoneering, and an easy pairing with Moalboal an hour north.
What to expect
There are two very different ways to experience Kawasan, and it is worth deciding which one you are here for before you book. The falls-only visit is a short, flat walk in from Matutinao to the main basin, where the 40-metre main tier drops into a wide turquoise pool. You can swim in the roped-off area, ride a bamboo raft right up under the spray, picnic on the bank, and walk the trail up to the quieter second and third tiers. It suits families, non-swimmers in a life vest, and anyone who wants the colour without a long day in a river.
The canyoneering route is the other option: a 3-to-5-hour descent of the Kanlaob River canyon that starts about 5.5 kilometres upstream in Alegria and finishes at the falls. It strings together cliff jumps of roughly 4 to 10 metres, natural rock slides, swims through a narrow gorge, and a rope swing. Every jump is optional and guides show a climb-down alternative, but the swimming and scrambling are not — it is a genuine half-day of activity, not a walk.
Editorial review
Having been here as a kid and returning years later for a team-building event, I can say it’s lost none of its charm. It’s unchanged in the best way possible and never fails to enchant.

Know before you go
Entrance for a falls-only visit is around ₱200 per person for Level 1; the optional zipline (around ₱500–₱600) is paid separately on the day. Bamboo rafts under the falls have been permanently banned by local environmental regulations and are no longer available. Guided canyoneering is a regulated activity priced at roughly ₱2,000–₱2,100 per person, which covers the accredited guide, safety gear (helmet and life vest), environmental fees, motor transport to the jump-off, and lunch — confirm exactly what is included when you book, and book through an accredited operator rather than a roadside tout. A mandatory shuttle or local transport fee may also cost around ₱100; check official local tourism updates before travelling. The canyon water sits around 18–22°C and you must wear a life vest throughout. The drier months are roughly December to May; in the June-to-November wet season the river runs higher and canyoneering is sometimes suspended for safety after heavy rain. Kawasan pairs naturally with Moalboal, about 30 to 45 minutes north.
