Cebu City is where most trips start — the airport is a bridge away on Mactan, and the centuries-old churches, forts, and markets of the downtown heritage district sit within a short ride of the hillside viewpoints and restaurants above Busay. These are the places worth your time in the city and the Metro Cebu towns around it, with photos, directions, and what to expect before you go.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Cebu City?

Two days covers the city itself comfortably — one for the downtown heritage loop of churches, forts, and markets, and one for the hills above Busay with their viewpoints, gardens, and restaurants. Most travellers then use the city as a base for day trips further north or south, which is where the extra days go.

Is Cebu City worth visiting, or should you go straight to the beach?

Both, if you have the time. Cebu City is the island's historic and food capital and the only place with the full range of restaurants, malls, and transport links, but the beaches are all outside it — Mactan is closest at under an hour, and the south coast is two to four hours away. A common pattern is a night or two in the city, then out to the coast.

How do you get around Cebu City?

Ride-hailing apps and taxis are the simplest option for visitors and cover the city and Mactan reliably. Jeepneys are the cheapest and run fixed routes, and motorcycle taxis handle short hops. For day trips out of the city, most people either hire a car with a driver or use the north and south bus terminals.

What is Cebu City known for?

It is the oldest city in the Philippines and the site of Magellan's Cross and the Basilica del Santo Nino, which makes it the country's historic and religious centre. It is also known for lechon — Cebu's roast pig is widely considered the best in the Philippines — and for the Sinulog festival every January.
