Things to Do in Southern Cebu

Canyoneering to Kawasan Falls, the Moalboal sardine run, and Oslob's whale sharks.

All Cebu City Mactan Northern Cebu Southern Cebu Bantayan Island Camotes Islands

Southern Cebu is where the island's best-known day trips are: canyoneering and waterfalls around Badian and Alegria, the sardine run and reef wall off Moalboal, and the whale shark encounters at Oslob on the southeast coast. Most southern spots are two to four hours from Cebu City, so they pair naturally into a two- or three-day loop.

Frequently asked questions

What is southern Cebu known for?

Three things, mostly: canyoneering down to Kawasan Falls from Alegria and Badian, the sardine run and reef wall at Moalboal, and the whale shark encounters at Oslob. The south also holds several of the island's tallest waterfalls and a string of heritage churches along the coastal road.

Can you do southern Cebu as a day trip from Cebu City?

You can, but it is a long day — Moalboal and Badian are around three hours each way, and Oslob is closer to four. Tours that combine whale sharks with a waterfall typically leave the city before dawn. Staying a night on the coast lets you do two or three of these properly instead of one in a rush.

How do you get to southern Cebu?

Buses leave the South Bus Terminal in Cebu City throughout the day for Moalboal, Badian, Oslob, and the towns between them, and the coastal highway is straightforward to drive. Many visitors hire a car with a driver for a two-day loop, since the distances between southern spots are short but the public connections between them are slow.

What is the best order to see southern Cebu?

The common loop runs down the west coast to Moalboal and Badian for the reef and canyoneering, continues south around the tip, then comes back up the east coast through Oslob — or the reverse. Done either way it fits comfortably into two or three days without backtracking.
