Directions Getting there Know before you go

About Oslob Whale Watching

Oslob Whale Watching is one of Cebu's most famous marine attractions, offering visitors the chance to see whale sharks up close in the waters off Barangay Tan-awan. The experience takes place in the morning and typically involves a short boat ride followed by snorkeling or viewing the whale sharks from the water. With the huge gentle animals swimming nearby, it is a memorable wildlife experience and one of South Cebu's most popular activities. Visitors should follow all local safety and interaction rules and maintain a respectful distance from the animals. Visitors are required to follow local whale shark interaction rules, including no touching, keeping a safe distance, and following the instructions of the guides. Sunscreen and insect repellent are also prohibited during the water interaction.

What to expect

Oslob is where you can be in the water with whale sharks — the world's largest fish — within an hour of arriving, without a boat trip offshore. After a short briefing on the beach at Barangay Tan-awan you are taken out by paddled outrigger to an interaction area about 150 feet from shore, where feeders in small canoes hand out shrimp and three to ten sharks circle the boats, sometimes within arm's reach. You get around 30 minutes in the water. It is worth knowing what it is: a daily hand-feeding operation, and marine scientists have flagged for over a decade that provisioning changes the sharks' natural movement and feeding. Many visitors describe it as a guilty pleasure. Boat-only viewing without swimming is an option, and some travellers choose Donsol (Sorsogon) instead, where the sharks are wild and not fed.

Know before you go

The activity runs mornings only, roughly 6am to noon, in 30-minute slots; the standard fee is around ₱1,000 per person and covers the spotter, life vest and registration. No sunscreen, oils or lotions — rinse off before boarding, as the chemicals harm the sharks and reef. The rules are no touching, no riding, no flash, and staying about two metres back. Book ahead through the official channel and arrive at 6–7am for calmer water and fewer crowds. It is about 117 km and 3 to 3.5 hours south of Cebu City, so leave before dawn or stay in Oslob the night before.
