About Osmeña Peak

Osmeña Peak is the highest point in Cebu, rising about 1,013 meters above sea level in the highlands of Mantalongon, Dalaguete. The summit is famous for its dramatic cluster of sharp, grassy limestone peaks, often compared to the Chocolate Hills of Bohol. The relatively short hike leads to sweeping views of Cebu's mountain ranges, coastlines, Tañon Strait, and nearby islands. Sunrise is especially popular, when the peaks glow in the early morning light.

What to expect

Osmeña Peak is the highest point in Cebu, about 1,013 metres up in the Mantalongon highlands of Dalaguete — and the reward is out of proportion to the effort. The walk from the trailhead is only 15 to 20 minutes on a rocky path through farm plots, and it opens onto a ridge of sharp, grassy limestone peaks often likened to Bohol's Chocolate Hills, with a 360-degree view over Cebu's mountains, both coastlines and the Tañon Strait. Sunrise is the classic choice, but the summit is often fogged in at dawn; late afternoon and sunset give a better chance of a clear view. Camping on the ridge is popular.

Know before you go

You register at the hikers' centre — around ₱30 per person — and a local guide is usually required or strongly encouraged for roughly ₱150 to ₱300 per group; sort this at the centre, not with roadside offers. It is genuinely cold and windy up top, especially early and late, so bring a jacket. The dry season, November to May, has the least mud and the best odds of a clear sky. From Cebu City it is a 3-to-4-hour bus to Dalaguete then a 20-to-30-minute habal-habal to the trailhead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Osmeña Peak?

🚗 Car / 🏍️ Motorcycle — Recommended. From Cebu City, travel south toward Dalaguete, then head inland to Mantalongon and continue toward the Osmeña Peak jump-off point. By public transport, take a southbound Ceres bus to Dalaguete, then a habal-habal to Mantalongon and the trailhead. The drive from Cebu City takes roughly 2.5–3 hours by private vehicle.

When is the best time to visit Osmeña Peak?

December–May generally offers clearer conditions and better visibility. For the classic experience, arrive before sunrise, with the trailhead typically reached around 4:30–5:00 AM. Late afternoon is another good option for cooler temperatures and sunset views.

Where is Osmeña Peak located?

Osmeña Peak is at Barangay Mantalongon, Dalaguete, Cebu. That puts it in Southern Cebu. It is roughly 73 km from Cebu City.

How hard is the hike to Osmena Peak?

Easy. The walk from the trailhead is only 15 to 20 minutes on a rocky path through farm plots before it opens onto the ridge, so it is doable for most fitness levels.

Is sunrise or sunset better at Osmena Peak?
